It was only going to be so long before the Android operating system made its way on to digital cameras and there is no company more fitting than Samsung to be one of the first to release a ‘smart camera’.
The simply named ‘Samsung Galaxy Camera’ packs a feature set that would be top of the range for not only a compact digital camera, but a smartphone as well.
Samsung has skimped in no way when it comes to the Galaxy Camera, which means that it launches with the latest version of Android – 4.1 Jelly Bean - and a 1.4GHz quad-core processor.
In terms of its camera features, you’ve got some pretty impressive specs as well - a 16MP image sensor, pop-up Xenon flash, 21X optical zoom and F.2 23mm lens to name but a few.
Unlike many compact camera and especially cameras on smartphones, the Galaxy Camera does not rely on digital zoom. With 21X optical zoom, you get the same level of image quality on a more distant object. With 21X zoom this is too a lot more than you get on most other compact camera.
Use 'Smart Mode' to chose from 10 pre-defined image setting options to try and obtain the best picture, or for the more advanced userl ‘expert mode’ includes support for manually adjusting aperture, shutter speed, ISO and other important camera settings.

It is not only still images you can capture. Teh Galaxy camera records video in 1080p at 120 frames per second, considerably more than normal smartphones and many compact cameras.
As well as impressive hardware features, Samsung has also included some brilliant software enhancements for the Galaxy Camera. Shoot in slow motion, edit video on the go or operate the camera with voice commands. Of course, there is also the huge range of Android apps and the customisation that they offer.
For all purposes other than phone calls, the Galaxy Camera has the feature set of a high end smartphone, meaning that functionality extends much further than just a camera.
As well as Wi-Fi, it includes a slim-slot for 3G connectivity, meaning that you’ll always have internet access to instantly upload photos (sim card required). The social media and photography apps available for Android mean that you’ll have plenty of sharing and editing options.
Furthermore, the Galaxy Camera features an HDMI port, so it’s easy to connect the camera to a screen and share your own photos and videos, or to watch movies and TV as you would on a smartphone. Or you can use Samsungs All Share Cast technology for wireless sharing.
Bolstering its entertainment offering, the Galaxy camera also has a 3.5mm port should you wish to connect a pair of headphones and listen to music. It comes with 8GB internal memory (some used by Android) and has microSD compatibility, so you have plenty of options for storing various media types.
Last but not least, there's the 4.8" super clear touch screen display. That's bigger than the display of most smartphones and makes it perfect for viewing your captured shots, watching movies or playing games.
Not only is the Galaxy Camera a superb digital camera, but it’s also a fantastic entertainment hub thanks to it running Android Jelly Bean.
